Singapore come 6th in Asia

The Singapore National Women's 7s Team earned their 6th placing in Asia after coming back from an early try from Chinese Taipei in their 12-5 win in the Asian Women's 7s Championships 2012 held in Pune, India.

Singapore were pooled with Asian giants Kazakhstan, Iran and United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the 15 team tournament that doubled as the Asian qualifier for the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013 in Moscow.

Singapore started their first day with a 20-0 win against Iran but soon had their backs to the wall when UAE scored two early tries in their second game to put the Gulf up 12-0. Starved of possession and defending against a physically larger UAE side comprised of expatriates, Singapore struggled to make headway but the republic held fast and made the most of their opportunities to come from behind and close out the game 19-15. The last game of their day went the bookmakers way with Singapore losing 31-0 to Kazakhstan however Singapore's two wins from the pool after day one placed them in the top eight teams in the tournament.

The Singapore Women’s 7s Team will be departing tomorrow for the Asian 7s 2012 to be held in Pune, India over the weekend. This year’s Asian 7s which will feature 16 teams also doubles as the Asian Qualifiers for the Rugby World Cup 7s 2013 to be held in Moscow.

Singapore’s squad features two changes from the team that travelled to Borneo 7s and Shanghai 7s with Ow Yong making her debut and Cramer who last played for Singapore in 2001. Both Ow Yong and Cramer were members of the Singapore team who won the bronze medal at the FIT World Cup Touch 2011 in Edinburgh.

Singapore face a current Asian no. 2 and Asian Games Champions Kazakhstan, Iran and United Arab Emirates in their pool. The republic will be looking to better their 7th place showing at last year’s Asian 7s. Fiji, which came in third after New Zealand and Australia in the Oceania 7s will also be participating to try and earn a spot for the Rugby World Cup 7s 2013.

Singapore came away Plate Winners in the Asia Pacific Women's 7s 2011 after a hard fought final against the Cook Islands in Borneo over the weekend. It was a remarkable turn around for the republic who had lost to the same team in the pool stages by the largest margin in their campaign and sweet revenge for the sudden death one-try defeat in last year's Plate Finals.

Pooled with Samoa, Hong Kong and the Cook Islands, Singapore had a slow start to the tournament with a 34-5 penalty-ridden loss to Cook Islanders in their first game notwithstanding a last-gasp try by Tan Hui Juan. The second pool game saw a better Singapore side which nearly edged Samoa in the 12-10 loss as Wong Yilin and Lim Li Yan got their names on the scoresheet. A 28-5 victory by Hong Kong in the final pool game placed Singapore at the bottom of their group which meant a cup quarterfinal play-off against China who topped the other pool comprising Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Tonga.

Asian 7s 2010: Singapore Edged Out In Plate Final

Singapore ended their Asian 7s campaign with a thrilling final against Hong Kong in the Plate Final of Asian Women's 7s Championships 2010 in Guangzhou over the weekend.

With 13 countries in the running, Singapore was grouped in the pool with eventual runners-up Kazakhstan and second-time participants India, the team needed a second place finish in the pool to make the top eight teams and the first division of the championships.

Singapore started brightly against Kazakhstan and were denied the first points on the board when Tan Hui Juan crossed the line for the republic. However, the physicality and experience of the Kazakhs, who are the sole Asian representatives at the Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 in London in August, were never in doubt and Kazakhstan sealed the first place in the group with another win against India.

Singapore's second pool game was a game against Thailand and the Republic was the first to put the points on the board as the Thais were pressured by Singapore's defence but Thailand bounced back with a win to put themselves in the running for the Cup Semi-Finals. Singapore recovered well with a convincing win against India to qualify for the Plate semifinals the next day.

The Plate Semifinals was no walkover as Chinese Taipei put up a spirited fight but Singapore's composure put them through to the plate final against old-time rivals Hong Kong.

It had been over two years since the last two countries met in a 7s series and the final proved to be a real nail-biter. Hong Kong were quick to release their lethal winger out wide and scored two tries in quick succession but Singapore would not let up and equalised in the second half. Momentum was swinging the republic's way and with a scrum in the middle of Hong Kong's 22m put Singapore in good attacking position. However the Hong Kongers held on eventually took the game with two more quick tries.

Singapore's final placing in the Asian Women's 7s Championships will put it in good stead in its appeal to the Singapore National Olympic Council to sanction the team for the Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Squad Selected for Asian 7s

The Singapore Women's 7s Squad for the Asian Women's 7s Championships 2010 was named on Monday.

Led by Captain, Derelyn Chua and Vice-Captain, Tan Hui Juan, the team will face 13 other Asian teams at the Asian 7s held in Guangzhou next week.

Singapore Women's Gearing Up for RWC 7s

The NWT 7s team were placed cup runners up against the Thai Women Babarians, which comprise members of the Thai Women's National team, in Bangkok over the weekend.

The National Women's 7s team participated in the two-day touranament as part of the run-up to the Rugby World Cup 7s asian qualifiers in early October. Seven other Thai sides, including Tammasat Kluong, Bangkok PE College and the Huayjorakae School, were part of the event. The first day saw the eight teams battle for pole positions in their respective pools with the two national sides coming on top.

In the cup final, the visiting side put in two early tries and were still up at half time. A slip in defence allowed the Thai Women Babarians to come back in to the game and the home side took the cup by just one try with the final score at 19-12
