Singapore SCNRA Women's Team Take Home A Win

In a weekend of many firsts, the Singapore Standard Chartered National Rugby Academy (SCNRA) Women's Team beat a gutsy Philippine Women's National Development Team on Saturday at the inaugural International Ladies 15s Rugby Football Challenge in Cebu.

It was a shaky start from the visitors as a host of handling errors had them pinned in their own 22m and the Volcanoes were the first to put the points on the board through Aiumi Ono. The SCNRA team responded swiftly through winger, Xie Ying in the 16th minute and half back Samantha Teo followed up with a breakaway try of her own minutes later with Esther Tan adding the conversions.

Although the SCNRA team enjoyed most of the possession for the next quarter, the backline attack lacked the punch needed to break the Philippine's defence until loosehead prop, Joanna Archana Bala, drove over the line through some forwards phase play before the half to bring the score to 19 - 5.

Academy Girls make Maiden Tour to Cebu

With the Asian Rugby Football Union's Women's 15s 2012 slated to be held in Manila in a fortnight and the Singapore Standard Chartered National Rugby Academy (SCNRA) Women's Team touring Cebu to play the Philippine Women's National Development Team, the Philippines will be seeing plenty of women's rugby action over the next few weeks.

Whilst the SCNRA has been involved with women's rugby in Singapore through introductory programs like PLAY! and other clinics, this will be the first time that a women's team from Singapore travels under the SCNRA banner since its inception. Notwithstanding, the SCNRA sponsorship will only cover part of the team expense for this maiden tour and most of the 23 member squad who are pursing a tertiary education have been raising funds to defray the cost of their tickets.

NUS Women Win SR RP Tertiary 7s Tournament 2010

The Singapore Rugby Republic Polytechnic Tertiary 7s saw 9 men’s and women’s teams from SMU, NTU, RP, SP, SIM and NUS slug it out at Republic Polytechnic's Sports Complex for the Tertiary 7s Title

The women’s competition kicked off with NUS against the SMU Barbarians. SMU Barbas scored quickly through Edwina Shaddick from a penalty 5 meters out from the NUS try line and looked like they might upset NUS’s chances at the title as neither side made much ground over the ensuing 10 minutes. However some cunning running from Esther Tan allowed the NUS to equalize. With a two minutes left on the clock, Caslin Ong outran the opposition to put NUS in the win 12 -5.

In the next match, NTU wasted no time in ripping apart the RP defence and scored four of their seven tries within the first half with some serious pace from Amanda Teo, Teo Siew Huai and Bridgette Yeo. RP managed to breakaway in the second half to put in a try but it was too little too late for the hosts.

This next match between NUS and SMU was going to be pivotal for both sides as the round robin format of the tournament would favour the team which could pull out the stops at every match. NTU were the first with points on the board and NUS threatened to hit back through a break by scrum-half, Xie Ying, but a try-saving tackle in the try area by Teo Siew Huai prevented any such relief. The reprieve for NTU was short-lived as Esther Tan touched down for the equalizer off a scramble for the ball after a NTU put-in at the scrum.

NUS put up a commendable defensive display to shut down the NTU speed demons but struggled to get clean possession in attack as Lee Tao Jing wrecked all manner of counter-rucking havoc to the cheers of the crowd. However, NUS stuck to their guns and were rewarded with victory through Christabelle Lim as a prolonged period of defence gave way to indiscipline from NTU. It was the second hard-fought win in the day for NUS which was reflected in the 12-5 scoreline.

SMU Barbas then took on RP with relative ease trotting to a 43 - 0 win due in part to a disorganized RP defence but mostly thanks to some hard running by Samantha Teo, Chan Jiayu and Shaddick.

In the penultimate match of the women’s competition, NUS showed composure and confidence to put in six tries. RP scored with a consolation just before the final whistle but NUS had sealed the title and the MVP award which went to Esther Tan.

NTU and SMU Barbas’ final match of the day would decide the second and third placing and it started keenly as both sides tried to assert themselves but a few missed tackles allowed SMU Barbas to take the lead with two tries. NTU came back strongly were the first to score after half time but were unable to plug all the defensive gaps. SMU Barbas finished the game 20-7 to take second place.

Final Rankings: NUS (1st), SMU Barbas (2nd), NTU (3rd), RP (4th)

SIM narrowly pip NUS to SUNIG title

The Singapore Inter University Games (SUNIG) 2010 for women’s rugby saw the four universities slug it out at the NUS on Saturday 2 October 2010.

NTU fresh from their Bowl Runner Up placing at Jonah Jones 7s 2010 the weekend before kicked off proceedings against SMU and they emerged with a comfortable 24 -7 win over the latter.

The second pool game was to be a hotly contested between SIM and NUS who had met each other in the finals of three previous varsity tournaments. SIM had the mental edge having won two of their previous 7s encounters but were caught out in their first game losing to NUS 17 – 5.

SIM were to be challenged again in their second game by NTU who fought bravely but SIM managed to come out with a 20-12 win. In the next match, NUS had to come from behind against SMU as a lapse in concentration near the try line resulted in the first points on the board from SMU. NUS recovered to bring the final score to 21-5.

The last two games in the pool round saw SIM beginning to show some of their true form with a resounding 46-0 victory over SMU. It was a tense encounter between NTU and NUS with one-try each at half time before NUS sealed their top ranking for place in the finals with try before the whistle.

The format of the tournament meant SIM had a second bite a the cherry and the finals was a closely fought encounter between the two rivals. With teams tied at the break it was going to be a case of who caved-in first. SIM looked more threatening in the second half and an unfortunate lapse in defence cost NUS the title but it was a finals not devoid of grit and guts.

SIM wins RP Invitational 7s 2010

SIM took the Republic Polytechnic Invitational 7s 2010 title last weekend at the RP Astro Turf.

Whilst the past three tournaments have seen SIM and NUS wrestle for the top placing and notwithstanding the absence of several key players from the two teams, the day's proceedings suggest NTU and SMU are to be genuine contenders in the coming season.

NUS 1 and NTU started their pool with a draw throwing Group A wide open. SMU started cold against NUS 1 who took the game 15 -5 but SMU quickly found their feet and put in 3 tries to 1 against NTU in the first half. NTU however showed true grit to respond with 2 more tries after half time to bring the game to a draw and place themselves in contention for the cup. In Group B, the vastly experienced SIM had no problems topping their pool by beating NUS2 and RP by 30 -0 and 37 - 0 respectively.

NUS put out their best display of the day in their 27-0 win against RP in the first cup semifinals and NTU fought valiantly but were unable to overcome SIM in the other semifinals bowing out 20-5.

SMU walked away as Bowl winners over a relatively new NUS 2 and NTU were put to the grind but emerged victorious in their 15-10 win over RP in the Plate finals.

In the Cup finals, NUS conceded a single try to SIM in the first half but were unable to contain the SIM counter attack in broken play in the second half and had to settle for cup runners up in the 20-5 cup final

PLAY! : week 3

Week 3 of PLAY! was a physical affair with the introduction of rucks. The participants were taught about body positions, ball placement, recycling techniques and offside lines.

Later the new skills were put into practice through drills and modified games introducing phase play.

The final week of PLAY! will see participants learning about re-starts, such as lineouts and scrums.

The participants of the introduction to rugby union for girls, PLAY!, enjoyed another weekend of activity.

In the second week, the girls were taught about the mechanics of the human body, how to activate their core muscles to stay compact in contact and what constitutes a strong body position in the game.

The girls were also introduced to the elements of a front on tackle and how to fall in a safe manner.

PLAY! got off to a bright start last weekend at the Astro Turf of the Republic Polytechnic.

Participants from Polytechnics, Junior Colleges and Secondary Schools gathered for the progam introducing Rugby Union to girls. The clinic kicked-off with ball handling and spatial awareness activities and included an introduction to punt kicking.

The program will run for another 3 weeks and will include introduction to other skills such as tackling, ball rentention, principles of defence and attack as well as some unit skills such as scrums and lineouts. For more information and to sign up, visit the PLAY! website.

NUS stage SIM upset to steal win

If the pool stages were anything to go by, the playoffs of the RP Invitational Women’s 10s Tournament held last Thursday fulfilled its promise to be a nail-biting thriller with twist.

Group A leader National University of Singapore (NUS) and Group B runner-up Republic Polytechnic (RP) kicked-off the first semi final with a tightly fought match. Under pressure from the start from a rushing RP defence and several kicks from an RP boot, NUS were sloppy and unable to mount any meaningful attacking phases. Just as the game looked to be going into extra time, NUS managed to get the ball wide to winger Caslin Ong and a fine support line from Christabelle Lim secured NUS a last gasp win and a place in finals.

The second semi-final saw Singapore Institute of Management University (SIM) take on National Technological University (NTU) with the latter enjoying more possession and a few good attacking phases. But NTU squandered their build up with several unforced errors and SIM, the considerably more experienced team, punished them with two early tries through Chan Jia Yu and Clarissa Lim to seal their cup final spot.

In a dramatic Plate Final matching last week’s 5th /6th playoff between the Combined Team and SMU, NTU appeared to have the edge with a try from Lee Tao Jing but were forced into a extra time when RP’s Sophie Gollifer broke to equalize before full time. However, within a minute of the start of the sudden death, a lapse in defence by RP allowed NTU’s Amanda Teo to make a dazzling run give her team victory.

Anyone who had written off NUS based on the their previous encounter with SIM at SUNIG last month was to be sorely mistaken as they put their three-try defeat behind them to stage the upset of the tournament. A change in game plan saw NUS tightening up their attacking phases and testing SIM at the breakdowns and scrums. NUS nearly lost possession with some risky passes but managed to foil SIM's open play with some stellar defending to keep the board scoreless at the end of the first half.

Both teams looked battered at the break but the short hiatus seemed to invigorate NUS and Amelia Siew caught SIM napping off the fringe of the ruck in SIM’s half soon after and she took full advantage to put the ball under the posts. Skipper, Wong Yilin, made sure to buffer their winning margin with a conversion.

Although SIM threatened to break once or twice with an overlap, they were on the back foot for most of the second half against a resilient NUS defence and Siew duly rewarded her team’s efforts with 50m break off the blind side of the ruck to seal their place as Cup Champions of the RP Invitational Women’s Tens Tournament 2009 just before the final whistle.

There was a certain buzz at Republic Polytechnic’s astroturf yesterday evening as the RP Invitational Women’s 10s Tournament pool stages got underway. With all teams pitching everything they had, the title race looked to be a tight one for the playoffs next Thursday.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nayang Technological University (NTU) kicked things off with a closely fought game. A tenacious NTU defence kept NUS scoreless in the first half. NUS’s flyhalf, Wong Yilin, soon found some space for a fine break and a conversion, which was to prove crucial in their win as NTU’s Amanda Teo ran her trademark sideline hugging dash to even out the tries before full time.

In Group B, the Combined Team, comprising players from the Institute of Technical Education, Nayang Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, held home team RP to scoreless draw which raised the impetus for both teams to beat or keep slim scorelines against Singapore Institute of Management (SIM).

Group A’s second game saw NTU put their foot on the gas against SMU, whose scrumhalf, Esther Phua, deserves mention just for getting her team out of trouble a few times and making some darting runs from the scrum combined with some well places kicks. However, NTU worked two well-earned tries to clinch the game 12-0.

SIM faced a good fight against the feisty RP who were cheered on by their supporters. SIM put in two tries through Clarissa Lim and Chan Jiayu before they were caught napping on a penalty and RP’s Eunice Chu took full advantage to put one under the posts. The game ended 10-7 to SIM.

SMU struggled in the first half against NUS who found gaps through the middle of their defence, through flyhalf, Esther Tan and winger, Caslin Ong, who ran in two tries against the opposition before half-time. Amelia Siew found the line for NUS in the second half of some good support play to end the game 22 -0.

Just one try and a conversion away from wrenching second spot from RP in their pool, the Combine Team stormed the pitch against SIM. Their defensive effort held an otherwise far more experienced side to a 12-0 game which saw Lim Liyan and Chan put down the points for their team but was insufficient to boot RP out from second placing within the group.

The final game of the day between the Combined Team and SMU was to say the least, a laborious one for both sides. Both teams showed a steely determination not to give and the match went in to extra time. For most part, neither team threatened to a score until the dying minutes of the extended period when the Combined Team found themselves camped out in SMU’s 22m area. They were finally rewarded with a try which was a cause for some controversy as the Combined Team touched the corner post before grounding the ball. But referee Saudi Tan was right in awarding the try which would have otherwise been disallowed under the old Laws.

Given the display at the groups stages, one would be hard-pressed to name any clear favourites based on current form, save for SIM, which maintains an edge with their experience.The play-offs next Thursday will see NUS face RP and SIM face NTU for a spot in the finals.

SIM Win University Women's 10s 2009

Singapore Institute Management (SIM) were victorious, emerging as the Cup Champions in the inaugural Singapore Rugby University Women’s 10s Tournament 2009. The tournament was held at NUS on Sunday 27 September, and saw all four Universities challenging each other in a 10s tournament for the first time. The universities that took part were Singapore Management University (SMU), National Technological University (NTU), National University Singapore (NUS), and SIM.

The first game was a close match between SMU and NTU. SMU put up a strong fight against NTU but a lapse in defence left them trailing 0-5 at full time. NTU scored the only try in the game through their speedy runners

NUS and SIM who were the favourites in the tournament played the second game of the tournament. Both teams were equally matched during the first few minutes of the game. SIM had seven players from both the Singapore A Squad and National Team, and their attacking phases and support were too strong for NUS. SIM eventually won the match 15-0.

The third game saw NTU and NUS renew their age old rivalry on the rugby pitch, and it was a nail biting affair. NTU scored the first try but NUS managed to put in a try just before half time under the post and the score was 7-5. NTU scored their second try and was leading 10-7. Just two minutes before full time, a lapse in the NTU defence at the blind side allowed NUS to take the game 12-10.

SIM continued to be the strong contenders for the title, and ripped SMU’s defence apart with 31 unanswered points through their solid attacks.

NUS continued their good form and beat SMU 31-0 in their final match.

In the last game of the tournament, NTU played their hearts out against SIM. NTU’s struggled in defence allowing SIM to touch down four times. NTU responded a late try but this was not enough as SIM sealed the win at 20-7. With that win, SIM emerged undefeated in the tournament and they were rewarded with the title of Cup Champions.

It was a fantastic day for women’s rugby as the supporters witnessed the commitment and enthusiasm of the four university teams. Singapore Rugby would like to thank all the competitors and coaches, as well as all who helped out and supported the event in one way or another. The next tertiary tournament will be held in October at Republic Polytechnic.

NUS take M1 Girls 7s Title

The team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) took the M1 Girls Rugby 7s by storm at the Yio Chu Kang Stadium on Saturday against some strong competition from Singapore Management University (SMU), Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and Republic Polytechnic (Republic Polytechnic).

The tournament featured six teams from various universities, polytechnics, ITE and schools which were coached by the Singapore Women’s National team players under Singapore Rugby’s development program.

It was a close call for SMU who won the game in Pool A by a single try against the ever feisty Bukit Batok Secondary School (BBSS). BBSS showed once again that their smaller frames did not mean they were a pushover when they put in a try in a 5-10 loss to NP, who eventually topped the pool with a 10-0 win against SMU.

In Pool B, ITE put up a strong fight against NUS but a fragmented defence left them trailing 0-15 at full time. RP, who were always strong contenders for the title, ripped the ITE defence apart with 26 unanswered points through their speedy runners and some solid kickoffs at the restarts. The final pool game between RP and NUS was a close one with RP up by a conversion until a late break by NUS put them ahead 10 -7.

RP lost their semifinal match against NP which continued their winning streak with a 10-0 victory. The second semifinal proved to be a real nail-biter with SMU putting in the first try from quickly taken penalty against a disorganized NUS defence. NUS had to play catch up but answered quickly with an unconverted try leaving both teams 5 points apiece at full time. The sudden death extra time had everyone on knife edge with some breaks and several smashing tackles from both sides but a lapse in the SMU defence allowed NUS to take the game 10-5 and proceed to the finals.

In the playoffs, ITE took fifth place against BBSS in a two-try winner. For the third place, RP re-gathered its troops and stepped up their game against SMU who gave away one penalty try from a high tackle bringing the final score to 24 - 5.

With both sides still undefeated, NUS and NP were posed for an exciting final. NUS put in an early try in the finals against NP and were in danger of allowing the NP attack through the ranks but some stellar cover defending from NUS and mishandling from NP prevented the latter from putting any points on the board. NUS won the final 10 - 0.

PLAY! - Kicks Off University Friendlies

As part of the SRU's initiative in the universities - PLAY! Introduction to Contact Rugby for Girls in Universities, National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Nayang Technological University (NTU) /National Institute of Education (NIE) fielded teams in a series of friendlies against each other and Bucks RFC last weekend.

NTU showed great finesse by taking their opening game 4-1 against a slow-start NUS. SMU were also quick to assert their dominace in beating Bucks RFC 5-0. NUS soon got their game going in the next match against SMU but were not able to match the pace of SMU and conceded their second match 2-4. In the next game of the round robin matches, Bucks RFC's newbies out in 2 tries against NTU but were 4-2 down at the final whistle. NUS stepped up their game again to take the penultimate match 4-0 against Bucks RFC.

Both NTU and SMU entered the final match without each having lost any games but there was to be only one victor and finally whilst NTU defended with bravery, the benefit of having several players with a touch rugby background paid off for the SMU girls. SMU took the final game 6-1 against NTU/NIE.

PLAY! Intro to Contact Gets Underway

The Introduction to Contact Rugby for Women takes off this week after the coaching clinic on 11 Oct 2008. Games will be held on 8 November 2008 where teams will be able to pit their new skills against each other.
