USA emerged winners against Canada in the battle for the Women's title at the 2008 Hong Kong Women's 7s.

On Thursday, Singapore met eventual runners up, Canada, first in their pool and held the physically larger and more experienced side well in the opening minutes to keep the score at 21-0. Canada dominated the second half putting in another 5 tries to bring the full time score to 56-0.

Singapore's other pool game ended 38-0 to the expatriate team from the Arabian Gulf. Captain, Aslinda Abdullah and Vice-Captain, Ang Weiyi put in an exemplary performances on the first day with their sound tackling and commitment in defence.

The second day saw a rejuvinated Singapore side take on Hong Kong in the playoffs for the 9th to 12th placing. However, Singapore were unable to stop Hong Kong from blazing their way into at 15-0 win as they struggled to get clean ball off the base of the scrums and lineouts.

The team put some points on the board in their final game against Papua New Guinea, when a neat off-load from Tan Hui Juan put Clarissa Lim on a line break with Derelyn Chua finishing under the posts.

Team Manager for the Singapore side, Audrey Koh, felt the team handled themselves well against physically bigger, stronger teams like Canada and Arabian gulf.

"For some of the players, this would have been their first time playing at international scale. It is commendable that the team was able to execute what was drilled during the short 6-week training sessions leading up to the tournament."

"The games got progressively better as the tournament wore on, but obviously there is still a lot to basic and fitness work to be done for the RWC qualifiers coming up in October."

"Despite being a relatively new team, they girls were able to gel into one cohesive unit, and this is a uplifting start for the future of women's rugby in Singapore."

"We were particularly pleased with the 3 rookies, Clarissa Lim, Annabel Woo and Wong Yilin, who stepped up during the tournament, giving some of the more experienced players a run for their money with their passion, enthusiasm and whole-hearted performance on the field."

In the cup-semi finals, France loss narrowly by an unconverted try to USA and other Asian countries made thier mark with Kazakhstan, China and Japan coming in 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. The Netherlands stopped Arabian Gulf from getting in to 7th place and Hong Kong stormed their way in to 9th place ahead of Thailand.
