Blacks Take Rd 1 Against SRC

WNRC XV 2008
Round 1 Game 2
SRC v Blacks
2 August 2008

Blacks RFC Blacks RFC

The much anticipated match between SRC v Blacks kicked off under the flood lights of the Yio Chu Kang stadium on Saturday.

Under new coach Peerose Shah, SRC were determined to dominate the breakdown as evidenced by the blue jerseys committed to the rucks and mauls. However, the Skyllas' attempt to slow the ball in defence at the breakdown cost them a host of penalties for not rolling away which gave away precious ground throughout the first half.

Blacks opened their scoring account through some fine runs by outside center, Derelyn Chua and fullback, Leung Wai Mun. With Blacks resident hooker, Gina Tan, absent, Wang Shao Ing, moved out of the back row and added 3 points when a penalty was awarded against SRC in front of the posts and added another five shortly after from a quick tap penalty. Chua struck again before half time to take the score to 25-0.

SRC continued to suffer at the set pieces in the second half as they were unable to keep possession at the lineouts and scrums. As a result, the Skyllas' backs had few opportunities to try and break their opposition's defence.

But they were able to make a surge early in the second half to put some points on the board. Taking advantage of the napping Blacks defence, SRC's Annabel Woo, crossed the line for the Skyllas through a concerted forwards effort through a driving maul.

Blacks used their hard running decoy runs creating numbers out wide which Chua was able to exploit easily to put herself and wing Amanda Teo through to bring the finals score to 40-5 to Blacks.
