15 February 2008
With the appointment of Gene Tong to the Standard Chartered National Rugby Academy, SRU has announced that Marcus Yeo has been appointed the National Women's 7s & 15s Head Coach.
The former national captain who played for the men's national 7s and 15s sides from 1988-1995 counts the 1995 SEA Games and winning the Bowl Championship at the Fiji 7s in 1995 as some of his career highlights.
Ridzal Saat, Head of Rugby at the SRU, who played with Yeo recalls him as a "solid and skillful Center" and remembers best their win as Plate Champions as SAFSA in the 1991 SSC 7s.
A current coach at Saint Andrew's School, Yeo is fully aware of the legacy he is inheriting from Tong having assisted with the women’s 15s coaching in 2007, “I know what Gene has achieved with the girls and my mission is to improve on what he has built."
“I believe I have much to contribute to the women based on my experience.”
One of those experiences is returning from the 1995 SEA Games without the Gold Medal around his neck and Yeo has his eye firmly on the 25th SEA Games 2009 in Laos “I’ve been there and I know what its like to be so close. I really believe that with the talent we have, the gold is within our reach.”
But for now, Yeo is focused on bringing some youth into the Women's 7s squad, "Our current senior players have been ranked 2nd in Asia and it is important that we transfer the skills that they have developed to the younger players. "
Also appointed as assistant and forwards coach of the women’s 15s, is Peerose Shah. A national player since 1993, Shah is no stranger to the women’s 15s squad having coached them for the ARFU Women’s XV Championships in 2006. One of the founders of Wolfpakz RFC, Shah is devoted to developing grassroots rugby, he coached the national U16 team in 2007 and is full-time coach in several schools.
The Singapore Women's 7s team will be participating in the Hong Kong 7s on 27 March 2008 and the Women's 15s are preparing for the ARFU Women's 15s Championships in Kazakhstan at a date to be confirmed in April/May 2008.
