Singapore Select v Australian Army
12 August 2007, Farrer Park
Led by Lt Col Rod Farrer, the Australian Army Rugby Team arrived in Singapore for a training tour ahead of their Defence Championships. Having defeated a Bucks-SRC and Blacks in two friendlies at the plush grounds of the Home Team Academy, the Australian Army Team were all set for their test match against the Singapore Select and a hat-trick on their tour.
Based on performances by the players during the VB NRC XV League 2007, Gene Tong, the women's 7s and 15s head coach, was able to make a his selection for his first XV.
Singapore received the ball from the kick-off, and ran several phases against the Australian Army. Great support from broken play allowed Singapore to score the opening try of the game at the 5m down on the right side of the field.
The Australian Army came back fighting and started to dominate play with slow ball options and pick & gos to run several phases deep into the Singapore 22m. Several penalties given against Sinagpore let the Australian Army forwards run in their equalizing try in the last minute of the first half. At halftime both teams had 5 points each.
The second half saw the Australians pounding the Select side right from the restart. Their efforts paid off with another try from forwards in the third minute of the game but Singapore was not to be deterred and dominated the play with quick ball out to the backline which resulted in two quick tries in the 18th & 21st minute.
Singapore's final try of the game came from some wide play across the park and won the match 22-10.
