The Singapore Rugby Union’s inaugural Girls’ 7s Carnival kicked off to a great start in the early hours of 12 May 2007 at the grounds of Pioneer Secondary School
The fruit of the SRU’s Introduction to Modified Contact Rugby for Girls Program, the 12 teams, which were coached entirely by various players of the National Women’s Team, were a testament to the growing interest in rugby union for girls and a great boost to the development of women’s rugby in Singapore.
A total of seven schools took part in the competition with a combined side with girls from various other junior colleges and polytechnics forming the three Blacks teams.
RJ – Raffles Junior College
PJ 1 / PJ 2 – Pioneer Junior College
NJ1 / NJ 2 – National Junior College
SP Angels – Singapore Polytechnic
Red Ruggers – Bukit Batok Secondary School
RP - Republic Polytechnic
Blacks Cheetahs/Panthers/Hyenas
Group A saw RJ top the table with relative ease scoring 6 unanswered tries against PJ 2 (20-0) and the Blacks Hyenas (14-0). The Black Hyenas later put PJ2 out of the running for the Plate by scoring and converting one additional try in closely fought match.
In Group B, the Blacks Cheetahs narrowly fought off NJ1 (10-7) in the group’s first fixture. Losing 32-0 to NJ1, the Red Ruggers turned their game around and showed great heart in holding group leaders, Black Cheetahs (0-5) to one try in the final group B match.
No surprises in Group C as the SP Angels cruised comfortably to the Cup semi-finals beating the Barbarians (35-0) and PJ1 (20-0). PJ1 clinched a spot in the Plate semi-finals and relegated the Barbarians to the Bowl semi-final with a 24-0 win over the latter.
A real upset was staged by NJ2 in Group D when they eclipsed RP’s chances of a shot at the Cup by taking them 10-5 to move in to the Cup semi-finals. RP bounced back and sent the Black Panthers to the Bowl semi-finals in a (29-0) win to end the pool games.
In the Bowl semi-finals, PJ 2 and the Black Panthers managed narrowly to put away the Red Ruggers (5-0) and the Barbarians (10-5) respectively to book a place in the Bowl Finals. The Black Panthers took the Bowl by scoring two tries against PJ 2 who battled bravely but were unable to convert their possession to tries.
Both NJ 1 and RP looked comfortable winning their games over the Blacks Hyeenas (10-0) and PJ (10-0) for their spot in the Plate finals. National Junior College disappointed RP a second time that day when they scored the only try in the final to win the Plate (5-0).
The first Cup semi-final saw RJ put in the first try against the Blacks Cheetahs. Unable to equalise, the brave Cheetah’s chances of a cup final were dashed in the (0-5) loss. The SP Angels stepped up their game to show why they were worthy group leaders in their Cup semi-final against the valiant NJ2 and sealed their place in the Cup final against RJ.
As the midday sun fuelled the excitement of the crowd and the 126 participants, the teams took to the field for the much-anticipated cup final between the SP Angels and RJ. An RJ kickoff gave the Angels possession first but RJ’s prolific try-scoring skipper, Toffa Abdul Wahed, had other plans when a she made a 70m break from a turnover ball to put a try under the posts. With the most unconventional of techniques, she converted the try to take the score to 7-0. Not deterred, the feisty Angels kept RJ in their own half with some relentless go forward until a try came through the Angel’s Clarissa Lim bringing the score to 7-5 at halftime.
A kick that failed to go 10m put SP on the back foot early in the second half but both teams attacked and defended bravely and as the minutes ticked by it was clear the first team to score would be likely take the Cup. Two penalties against an ill-disciplined RJ defence led SP five metres out from the RJ try line and it seemed the Angels were never going to score until skipper, Ma Khine Su Mon Jamie, dummied a RJ defence to dive for the winning try of the tournament.
